On Saturday, 9th June, Cilcennin held its first ever ‘Village Day’. The all-day event, organised by Cilcennin Cyntaf, celebrated the talents of local people. The Aeron valley village’s former pub and Sunday School hosted wonderfully varied art & craft exhibitions. Cilcennin Gardening Club hosted a flower festival at the church, which also featured a breath-taking cello recital by international cellist Sharon McKinley.
Various outdoor activities benefitted from the beautiful early June sunshine; a guided tour around Blaencamel organic farm, several nature walks with help from Denmark farm and a local history trail to explore Cilcennin’s past. Cilcennin’s local history club also made an exhibition in the village hall, which provided much to talk about over tea and cake, made and donated by Cilcennin WI. Cilcennin’s successful primary school was particularly popular, as a new activity play area had just been erected the day before, to the delight of all the children! The evening event saw around 200 members of the community enjoy a hog roast, whilst a local live covers band, kept those with energy dancing into the night. As the fading light finally brought a close to a memorable day, it proved that community spirit is most definitely alive and well in Cilcennin. Cynnal y Cardi provided support to publicise the event.
The day was a great success and is hoped to be a pilot for a series of 4 /5 annual village days in the Aeron Valley, aimed at raising awareness and pride in the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
